Once when I confessed to Kobun that I had been neglecting my Zazen practice, he told me: "Sitting is not so important-- what is most important is to think about God every day". |

What beautiful & gentle energy here (with a core of strength) which reflects well the wisdom & essence of Kobun Chino so wonderfully. I myself sat at the School St. Zendo (in Santa Cruz) way back starting around 1972. It was always an oasis of calm and gentle wisdom that I looked forward to sitting with & learning from so very much each & every week. The peace and knowledge that filled the area from him was actually something quite tangible, clear as spring water, and something I will treasure in my heart (& inner self) always.

Thank you for this beautiful site that captures Kobun‘s essence. I have been feeling Kobun in my heart recently and am so happy to have found collective memories of him here. A true friend who taught by his presence in each moment. I feel always so lucky to have had time together with him - make tea, cook and visit.

Some of Kobun‘s words have been meaningful to me..."each precept is a remark about hard climing, maybe climbing down."
He seemed to be genuine and modest.
Rest in peace.

A lovley man it seems, a shame I missed meeting him. I was delighting in his works, words and just the simple sight of him on this site. Reading of his passing in such a ........way filled my heart with the feeling of that place from which rivers flow, misty miost dark and damp.

So happy to have found your web site! These past years, we‘ve been able to practice in the Kobun Chino Roshi lineage both in Switzerland and New Mexico/USA. We‘ll make sure that Jean Leyshon (Taos, NM) knows about the kobun-sama.org: she probably will be able to contribute (or is already doing so) to some anecdotes... Nancy & Rene |

Hello students of Kobun:
When I was sitting in the zendo, listening to many people‘s exciting memories of Kobun, I realized that much of my understanding of zen came from his making himself available in various group settings. I did not engage in very many one on one conversations with him, or if I did, they are lost. Now that I‘m trying to think back, there is one moment, when we were doing a 24 hour sitting and I was timekeeper. Kobun had given me some time to sleep, with my head on my gafu, in another room. I just remember him waking me up and so very much not wanting to wake up, and his so very gentle waking me up. For some reason, this memory rests in my heart, oh so gently.
What I need to communicate now is a request that students of Kobun, students of Vznja, for they are the same, take a look at the website www.Thursday-mornings.org.
Gassho,
Judy |

The Perfect Guest
When we went to meet you, you were already there. And when we arrived, they said you had left.
You were the traveler, who had met all our grandfathers.
When we begged you for stories, you played with the sounds of the words. When we stared, you made kabuki faces till we laughed. When we showed you a picture, you turned the mirror so we could see. When we poured you water, you divined a spring. When we asked you to dinner, you prepared the meal. When we folded down your bed, you helped us try on your robes. When we opened your window, you built us a mountain shrine. When you lit your pipe, the stars sparkled back. When we knocked on your door, we found you down by the river.
Not remembering, you had endless time for us. Not knowing, you blessed us with our own wisdom. Not hesitating, you calmed our fears. Being helpless, we found the possibilities in each moment. Being defeated, we learned to rest in solitude.
You were the great joy in a child’s life. The gentle monster, at our side, The old book that never needed to be opened, The karmic magician hardly noticed.
We sat silently in your lap and fell peacefully awake. You float eternally in our hearts.

Thank you for the pictures , calligraphy, and lectures. I‘ll be looking in once in a while to remember a good teacher on sitting.

Friends,
Kobun Chino was my first meditation teacher. In 1969 or 1970, I found my way to the Santa Cruz Zendo on Swift Street. I had never sat zazen before. He came around and very gently adjusted my posture as I was sitting. Then he joined us. Later, someone came to serve little lacquer bowls of ice cream. In his was a lit birthday candle, because, as I later learned, it was his birthday. We were all sitting with our eyes closed except for me, for I had peeked when I heard the footsteps of the server. Kobun never budged, even when the light of the lit birthday candle surely flickered in front of him. Only when the gong sounded at the end of the sitting did he open his eyes. He was looking straight forward, and as his eyes opened, he saw the candle and made a small but audible intake of breath. It was so genuine and sweet. He seemed utterly and innocently surprised. I found myself quite moved. I don‘t remember what he said that night. But his actions are sealed in my memory. He truly taught by example. Thank you.
